Seventeen students from Naitasiri Secondary School were involved in a vehicle accident on Monday, but they will be granted a compassionate pass, pending recommendations from the Sub Divisional Medical Officer (SDMO) of Naitasiri and the Head of School (HoS). Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro announced this support.

The accident occurred at Saumakia Junction in Navuniyasi Village, with Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu stating that the driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle, which went off the road. The injured students were promptly taken to Vunidawa Hospital for medical care.

Currently, the authorities have not released specific details regarding the cause of the accident, as investigations are still ongoing. Minister Radrodro confirmed that the compassionate pass would proceed upon receiving the necessary medical and school reports.

In addition, Mr. Radrodro informed that affected students would be encouraged to file claims with the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF). The Head of School will play a supportive role in assisting students, parents, and guardians throughout this process.

The Minister highlighted the importance of community awareness in ensuring safety, urging parents, guardians, teachers, and students to remain vigilant to avoid similar incidents in the future. He noted that this incident serves as a solemn reminder of life’s unpredictability and the strength of community support in challenging times.

Overall, while this tragic event highlights the need for increased safety measures, it also emphasizes the resilience and unity of the community as they come together to support the affected students and their families.
