A new initiative, the “Loloma Closet,” has been launched at Labasa Hospital to assist new mothers facing financial hardships and inadequate family support. Introduced during the International Day of the Midwife celebration, this project aims to meet the needs of vulnerable mothers and their newborns.
Eleni Kata, Director of the Sangam School of Nursing, shared that the idea originated from the observations made by doctors and midwives who recognized the rising struggles women encounter during childbirth. The Loloma Closet is stocked with essential items such as baby wipes, powder, lotion, diapers, and basic toiletries to provide immediate relief for those in need.
Kata highlighted that while Fiji may not be experiencing severe humanitarian crises like some developing countries, many women continue to face financial difficulties, domestic violence, and various social challenges. The long-term vision for the Loloma Closet is to establish sustainability through community support and donations, ensuring that assistance remains accessible to mothers requiring help.
This initiative aligns with previous efforts to support women’s well-being in Fiji, such as similar community projects aimed at empowering women through skills training and resource support. The ongoing commitment from organizations and community members reflects a hopeful outlook for enhancing the lives of mothers and children in need.
Overall, the Loloma Closet represents a significant step toward fostering maternal care and support systems within the community, with an optimistic vision for ongoing sustainability and impact.
