The National Fire Authority (NFA) has provided further insights into the tragic house fire in Jittu Estate that claimed the life of a mother of five. According to NFA’s Chief Executive Officer, Puamau Sowane, preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased may have attempted to take her own life prior to the fire, highlighting urgent concerns surrounding mental health and domestic issues.
In light of this incident, Sowane appealed to the community, particularly couples, to prioritize resolving conflicts in a peaceful manner to avoid such devastating outcomes. He emphasized the significant toll that these situations take not only on family structures but also through the extensive property loss, which often leaves families in challenging circumstances.
Emergency services were alerted to the fire at a residence on Grantham Rd in Raiwaqa, with the NFA receiving a call at around 2:48 p.m. Two trucks and eight firefighters from the Suva Fire Station responded promptly, but upon arrival, they found the house engulfed in flames. Fortunately, the father was able to evacuate the couple’s five children; however, he tragically lost his wife in the attempt to save her.
This incident is part of a concerning trend of increasing fire-related occurrences in the region. In response, the Fiji Police Force has urged residents to remain vigilant against potential fire hazards in their homes. They are advocating for fire safety measures and regular safety inspections to protect lives and properties while fostering a proactive safety culture within the community.
Parallel incidents in neighboring areas have underscored the critical need for heightened fire safety awareness. Authorities maintain that tragedies like this should act as a catalyst for instigating positive changes, motivating communities to enhance their fire safety protocols and better prepare for emergencies.
While the sorrow of this loss is profound, there is a ray of hope that the community will come together to tackle these pressing issues. By strengthening fire safety measures and supporting mental health awareness, residents can work towards preventing similar tragedies in the future and fostering a safer environment for all.
