The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has issued a strong call to the public to assist in safeguarding public infrastructure due to a concerning spike in vandalism incidents. Reports reveal that acts of vandalism are causing significant damage to critical assets, including road signs, bus stops, and bus shelters. These shelters, designed to provide safe haven for commuters especially during inclement weather, have seen increases in graffiti and unauthorized advertising, resulting in compromised safety and aesthetics.

The FRA emphasizes the vital role of road signs in ensuring smooth and secure traffic flow. Damage or removal of these signs not only creates hazards for drivers but also endangers pedestrians, raising serious concerns about public safety. The FRA has highlighted that ongoing vandalism incurs substantial costs for the maintenance and repair of affected facilities, diverting resources away from other infrastructure projects.

Chairperson Atunaisa Nayago has urged community members to take pride in their shared public property and to report any suspicious activities that may harm public infrastructure. By fostering a sense of communal responsibility, the FRA hopes to cultivate a culture that respects public assets. The collective effort of citizens can significantly reduce vandalism, thereby enhancing the safety and integrity of Fiji’s transport network.

Similar issues previously identified following the completion of the $62.944 million Queen Elizabeth Drive Road Project reflect an ongoing challenge for the FRA. Incidents of damage to new infrastructure highlight the urgency of addressing vandalism at a community level. Public engagement is expected to lead to improved vigilance and accountability, ensuring that public spaces remain safe, functional, and welcoming for all users.

The FRA’s proactive approach and focus on community involvement underscore a hopeful path forward. By coming together, the community can protect its infrastructure and promote a safer environment for everyone.
