The Qalitu and Buabua community in Lautoka is rallying together in the search for Rada Rukmani, an elderly woman who was reported missing after she was last seen returning from a wedding on Saturday, June 28.
Nand Kishore, a retired headteacher from Qalitu, has reached out to the Minister for Defense Pio Tikoduadua, urging the government to dispatch military officers for a search of the dense forest where Ms. Rukmani might have wandered off. Kishore, who has been leading a team of volunteers since June 30, noted their search efforts were unfruitful. He reported that a police team of approximately ten officers also conducted a search but was forced to halt due to the challenges posed by the thick underbrush.
In a related appeal, the Fiji Police Force has issued a missing person alert for Rada Rukmani, calling on local residents to assist in the search. This community-driven approach reflects a shared sense of responsibility and compassion as residents unite to support the efforts to find Ms. Rukmani.
Previously, the police in Nadi sought the public’s assistance for another missing individual, Aliti Kula, highlighting a concerning trend of missing person cases in the region. The community’s involvement remains crucial, showcasing how collective action can lead to community safety and support during difficult situations.
Such distressing circumstances underline the importance of staying aware of our surroundings and looking out for one another, especially for vulnerable individuals like the elderly. It is hoped that through ongoing support and concerted efforts, Rada Rukmani will be located and brought back to her loved ones safely.
