The recent grand opening of The Family Choice Supermarket & Cafe Pte Ltd in Walu Bay, Suva, marked a significant development for the local community, driven by a $200,000 investment from Custombilts Sheetmetal Co Ltd. This new supermarket aims to address a variety of local needs, offering an extensive selection of products ranging from groceries to hardware.
Managing Director Laleena Kumar undertook this initiative after noticing a demand from maritime customers for a supermarket that could consolidate shopping requirements into one location. “When I started my hardware business, I received several requests from customers wanting a supermarket with everything under one roof,” Kumar shared, emphasizing her dedication to serving the community.
The supermarket will not only enhance shopping diversity for residents but also create 30 jobs, including nine newly established positions. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, officiated the opening ceremony and praised the supermarket as an emblem of entrepreneurship and community-driven support, underlining its importance in boosting the local economy. He pointed out that such supermarkets play a vital role in supply chain management, offering market access for local farmers, fishermen, and producers.
The Family Choice Supermarket is part of a rising trend of community-focused businesses in the region, following the recent launch of Cagivou Supermarket, which similarly prioritizes local employment. These efforts are not just vital for providing essential services, but they also enhance the economic resilience and growth of the community.
The establishment of Family Choice Supermarket symbolizes a positive trajectory for economic development and community interaction. It showcases how local entrepreneurs can meet community needs while strengthening the local economy. As small and medium enterprises continue to grow, the potential for enhanced access to vital goods and services in the community remains promising.
