A new Family Choice Supermarket and Café has opened its doors in Walu Bay, creating over eight job opportunities for the community. As part of her vision, Managing Director Laleena Devi invested almost $200,000 to equip the supermarket, ensuring residents have convenient access to essential goods. This venture is part of a growing trend in the region, where community-oriented businesses are emerging to meet local demands and stimulate economic growth.

Devi highlighted that residents of maritime islands and interior areas have shown a significant need for a supermarket near the port, seeking easier access to groceries and other necessities. Her entrepreneurial journey began in 2012 with a hardware store, which she has since expanded upon, demonstrating her commitment to fulfilling community needs.

The Family Choice Supermarket is designed to be a one-stop-shop, offering fresh produce, groceries, and hardware essentials tailored to meet the diverse needs of customers. This development parallels other recent openings, such as the Cagivou Supermarket in Kinoya, founded by Fiji rugby star Jerry Tuwai, which aims to create job opportunities and empower local youth while addressing unemployment in the region.

These new supermarkets symbolize more than just increased retail options; they represent a significant step toward economic resilience and community development. By meeting local needs, these businesses are enhancing daily life for residents and contributing to a more vibrant community.

As more local enterprises follow this model, there is a hopeful outlook for sustained economic growth and greater empowerment for communities throughout the region. With these efforts, the possibilities for improved living standards and job creation appear bright.
