Clean-up operations commenced in Lakeba, Lau, as communities begin to recover from the damages inflicted by Tropical Cyclone Rae. Adi Sai Daumeke, a teacher at Ratu Finau Secondary School, reported that strong winds have caused roof damage to two teachers’ cottages and inflicted significant impacts on the island’s trees.

Although residents remain safe, they are grappling with water supply disruptions, complicating recovery efforts. Daumeke noted, “Teachers are working on our school tank because there is no water at the moment. The electricity supply has already been restored.” Consequently, teachers have started clearing debris from the school grounds as part of the ongoing clean-up.

Only one family has sought shelter at the evacuation center due to a leaking roof during the cyclone. The collaborative efforts of authorities and residents are paramount as they work together to restore normalcy to the island.

Recent reports underscore the importance of community solidarity in the face of disaster recovery. Previous articles highlighted similar proactive efforts across other regions in Fiji, including enhanced evacuation measures and community preparedness. Local residents demonstrate resilience through united actions and support structures, which continue to emphasize their capability to overcome challenges.

As the recovery progresses, this collective spirit serves not only as a response to current adversities but also as a foundation for community strength in the future. These actions embody hope, showcasing how communities can come together to navigate through difficult times, ensuring safety and recovery.
