A family of 15 has suffered a significant loss after a fire completely destroyed their home on Akuila Bale Street, Howell Road, Suva, around 9 a.m. The fire is believed to have initiated from the bottom of the house while homeowner Elenoa Domoni, 31, was away at work. Domoni was notified by a neighbor who witnessed the flames erupting from the lower portion of the structure.
At the time of the fire, Domoni’s father, who is partially blind, was inside the residence along with her three children, a cousin, and two nieces. Fortunately, a quick-thinking neighbor rushed into the burning house to rescue her father, who was oblivious to the unfolding disaster.
The family suspects that the fire may have been caused by a mosquito coil, though the official cause is still under investigation. Domoni expressed their devastation, stating, “We basically lost everything. All of our utensils, refrigerator, and washing machines. We have three beds, a cupboard, and a fence. The only clothes that is left is the one that is on our back right now.” The family’s total estimated loss, including the house and belongings, is around $40,000.
Since their relocation from Wailea Settlement in 2001, Domoni and her husband have been the only employed members of the household, making their current predicament even more challenging. In a heartfelt remark, she said, “I haven’t, we still I think I was talking with my husband and we don’t know where to go to right now.”
This incident echoes a series of recent fire tragedies in the region, including another family in Ba who lost their home to a fire that swept through while they were away. Community members have come together to provide support during these trying times, showcasing resilience and compassion in the face of adversity.
Authorities are actively investigating the causes of these fires, and local outreach efforts are underway to assist affected families. As they begin to navigate this difficult chapter, it is a testament to the strength of community bonds that support can emerge in times of crisis.
