Police have confirmed the identification of the mother of a newborn baby found abandoned in a hostel washroom in Lautoka earlier this week. The Lautoka Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is currently awaiting medical clearance before proceeding with an interview of the mother. The discovery of the infant, who was found inside a sanitary disposal bin, has alarmed the local community and reignited calls for better support systems for vulnerable women and mothers facing crises.

The incident took place on July 27, when a student reported hearing the baby’s cries, prompting staff to assist in retrieving the child. Emergency responders quickly transported the infant to Lautoka Aspen Hospital, where medical professionals confirmed that the baby is in stable condition and receiving appropriate care.

This case is part of a troubling pattern that highlights ongoing concerns about child welfare in Lautoka. Previous incidents of abandoned infants have underscored a desperate need for improved community support and awareness surrounding unplanned pregnancies. Many community leaders, including Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, have expressed the importance of open communication about these issues, emphasizing the collective responsibility to ensure that young mothers and their children receive the help they need.

As investigations continue, police are urging anyone with information to come forward, hoping community engagement can play a vital role in preventing further tragedies. The response from local residents has been encouraging, demonstrating a willingness to support children and families in distress. With heightened awareness and proactive measures, there is hope for building a nurturing environment that prioritizes the welfare and protection of vulnerable individuals in the community.
