A recent coastal clean-up event in Navua saw approximately 300 kilograms of waste collected within just 90 minutes, demonstrating a strong community commitment to environmental action. The clean-up, organized by the Pacific Ocean Litter Youth Project (POLYP) and the Pac Harbour Crew, attracted around 50 participants, including team members from the Namosi Provincial Council and Eco Guardians Fiji.

In addition to the clean-up, POLYP conducted coastal litter assessments to better understand the types and sources of waste found along the shore. This initiative included engaging local children and youths in a creative art project where they transformed the collected litter into art after it was thoroughly cleaned.

The event received support from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, which emphasized its ongoing “Do the Right Thing” national anti-litter campaign aimed at fostering greater community involvement in environmental preservation. Andrew Paris, co-founder of POLYP, shared insights from previous clean-up campaigns, noting that a prior event in Suva resulted in over a tonne of waste being collected.

Paris explained that the organization categorizes litter into 110 different types to analyze the waste more effectively. Common items found included PET bottles and food wrappers, indicating a pressing need for improved waste management practices. The engagement from community members and local officials, including Attorney-General Graham Leung, reflects a growing awareness and responsibility towards maintaining clean coastal environments.

With plans for future clean-up initiatives, possibly in areas like Tailevu, this event not only contributed to a cleaner beach but also fostered hope among participants for a more sustainable and environmentally-conscious future for Fiji. This ongoing effort underscores the importance of collective action in tackling pollution and promoting environmental stewardship in communities across the region.
