The Vanua of Betoraurau Sabeto’s environment committee has taken a significant step by receiving the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report regarding mining activities being conducted by Lion One Ltd along the Sabeto River. Don Natabe, the committee chair, indicated that this extensive report will be thoroughly reviewed by essential stakeholders to ensure all environmental concerns are addressed effectively.

In light of recent adverse events, particularly a discharge from Lion One Ltd that resulted in dead fish and eels being found in the river, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change previously advised locals against using the river until further tests confirm its safety. Natabe highlighted the need for external opinions to assist in scrutinizing both the mining company’s baseline studies and environmental management plans.

Emphasizing the importance of responsible resource management, Natabe stated, “We can’t develop projects that harm other individuals who share these resources.” He expressed a strong desire for the community to continue enjoying the natural beauty and resources Sabeto has to offer, while being diligent stewards of the environment.

While financial compensation discussions are necessary, Natabe prioritized the rehabilitation of the river, asserting the need for assurances that Lion One’s mining operations will not negatively impact local ecosystems or public health. The committee aims for a scientifically-backed commitment from government ministries ensuring the mining does not lead to sedimentation or other ecological harm.

Furthermore, as similar past incidents have shown, the call for stringent environmental protections reflects a growing awareness within the community regarding the balance needed between economic development and ecological preservation. The ongoing scrutiny of Lion One’s operations could serve as a foundation for stronger environmental governance and practices in the region, promoting healthier relationships between the community, the company, and local ecosystems.

This evolving situation brings to light the vital role local communities play in demanding accountability and sustainable practices within the mining industry, fostering hope for a future where economic activities can align harmoniously with environmental stewardship.
