Community Power: Key to Tackling Fiji’s Drug Crisis

The Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, emphasized the importance of community involvement in the fight against drug abuse in Fiji. Speaking at the opening of the 2024 Nasinu Festival, he highlighted the significant challenges posed by illegal drugs to communities across the nation.

Nalumisa remarked that the government is adopting a comprehensive and collaborative strategy to address this growing issue. He underscored the necessity of active community participation for the success of these efforts.

“Active involvement of the community is crucial to our success,” he stated. The minister explained that coordinated actions involving law enforcement, the judiciary, health services, and community organizations are being intensified to dismantle drug trafficking and distribution networks.

He called on community members to cooperate with the government to confront this urgent dilemma by engaging in awareness campaigns, reporting suspicious activities, and supporting educational initiatives aimed at preventing drug abuse.

“You can make a significant difference. Together, we can protect our neighborhoods, reduce drug-related issues, and ensure a safer, healthier city for everyone, paving the way for a brighter future.”
