Community Mourns the Loss of Influential Leader Ratu Meli Saukuru

The recent passing of Ratu Meli Qovuqovunivosa Saukuru, widely known as Momo na Taukei Navo, at the age of 78 on Tuesday has left a significant void in the community. Ratu Meli was a distinguished figure with extensive experience in both the private and civil sectors, demonstrating his commitment to service throughout his life.

Having held numerous noteworthy roles, Ratu Meli was the chairperson of various boards, including the Fiji Pine Group of Companies, Fiji Pine Trust, and the Ba Provincial Council. He also served as a Trustee of the Methodist Church of Fiji Holding Trust, showcasing his dedication to both business and spiritual leadership.

In a political capacity, Ratu Meli was previously the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs in the government led by Laisenia Qarase. His influence extended beyond government as he was also recognized as a tribal leader from Dratabu Village in Nadi, where he guided five clans: Yaro, Digilo, Navo, Ekubu, and Takuci. He held the position of Taukei Navo since 2005, symbolizing his commitment to his vanua.

Josefa Kurucake, the turaga ni yavusa o Digilo, paid tribute to Ratu Meli, acknowledging his steadfast dedication to his people, the church, and the state. Kurucake remarked on Ratu Meli’s significant impact across various sectors, affirming that he has left behind a lasting legacy.

Ratu Meli is survived by his wife, three children, and six grandchildren. His final resting place will be beside his home in Dratabu Village, with burial arrangements confirmed for April 10.

This loss resonates deeply within communities that Ratu Meli served, mirroring tributes shared for other prominent figures in recent obituaries, such as Tomasi Vuetilovoni and Ratu Ilaitia Tuisese. Each of these individuals shared a common thread of impactful service to their communities, leaving behind legacies that will continue to inspire.
