The Rewa Provincial Council has adopted a compassionate and community-focused strategy to combat drug abuse among youths in the province. During a recent meeting, Council chairman Ro Macanawai Mataitini emphasized that the goal is not punishment but rather understanding the deeper issues of disconnection and neglect that contribute to drug use.

Mataitini stated, “We are trying to play our part in eradicating the use of drugs in Rewa.” He highlighted that the responsibility lies not only with the individuals struggling with addiction but also with the community, particularly parents, to provide love and support. The council is encouraging each village to form crime prevention committees intended to foster supportive environments rather than resorting to punitive measures such as Domestic Violence Restraining Orders.

The chairman urged community members to avoid ostracizing those affected by addiction, noting that such actions do not solve the problem. Instead, he advocates for a rehabilitative approach that focuses on bringing people back into the community with care and understanding.

This approach parallels similar initiatives in other parts of Fiji, where community involvement has been crucial in addressing drug-related challenges. For instance, in a recent program in Suva, former addicts are stepping forward as community wardens to guide others based on their experiences. Such collaborative efforts demonstrate a collective resolve across Fiji to fight against drug issues and to empower individuals to change their circumstances.

With communities actively engaging in dialogue and support, there is hope for positive change that can lead to healthier environments for the youth, allowing them to have the necessary support systems to overcome difficulties related to substance abuse. These initiatives reflect a growing understanding of drug addiction as a societal issue requiring compassion, collaboration, and a commitment to transformation.
