Police have taken proactive measures following a recent brawl involving senior students at a school in Suva. In response to the violent incident, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu engaged directly with the students and held discussions with officials from the Public Rental Board to mitigate future occurrences of similar violence.
Commissioner Tudravu emphasized that such conflicts typically do not arise abruptly but rather develop over time. He revealed that the recent brawl was a continuation of a previous altercation between two students, suggesting a long-standing tension that ultimately erupted into violence.
To prevent further escalation, Tudravu appealed to parents and guardians, urging them to take an active role in guiding their children. He stressed the necessity for community involvement in correcting youth behavior before situations escalate to the point of police intervention. “As a society, we must step in and correct youths and children when they need it, rather than waiting for issues to worsen,” he stated.
The police response has been firm, as evidenced by the dispersal of a group of young individuals in the Mead Road housing area who gathered with intentions of causing further disorder. The Commissioner clarified that law enforcement will not be lenient based on age, indicating that all violators will be held accountable.
In addition to police efforts, community support is also important. Revered community leader Reverend Tevita Vuniwaqa, from the Nabua Methodist Church Circuit, has offered to facilitate a meeting with local youths, highlighting the collaborative approach needed to resolve these issues. Ongoing investigations aim to further address the root causes of youth violence in the area.
This situation underscores the importance of communication between parents and children and the role of community members in fostering a safer environment for young people. With continued dialogue and active community involvement, there is hope for a more peaceful future.
In conclusion, while the brawl has raised significant concerns, the proactive measures being undertaken by both law enforcement and community leaders provide a pathway toward healing and preventing future conflicts.
