A devastating incident at the Savusavu Police Station has left both a grieving family and a shocked community. Marika Radua, a farmer from Naviavia Settlement in Cakaudrove, lost his life on Tuesday after reportedly being assaulted by a fellow inmate.

Radua’s family is demanding accountability and clarity following his untimely death. He was detained for nearly six hours after an arrest earlier that morning. According to his aunt, Unaisi Solaila, Radua’s cousin, Samuela Male, visited him and discovered he was locked in a cell with two other inmates, one of whom is believed to be mentally challenged. Male recounted hearing Radua’s urgent cries for help around 11 AM but hesitated to act, fearing potential repercussions.

Shortly after, police removed Radua’s lifeless body from the cell. Ms. Solaila expressed her grief, stating, “They treated him like rubbish,” and noted that it was evident he had already passed away.

The family is left with painful questions, including why the police were not present during the alleged attack, the rationale behind housing a mentally challenged person alongside other detainees, and why Radua’s cries went unheard.

Community outrage is building, prompting calls for an overhaul of the personnel at Savusavu Police Station. Shiu Shankar Singh, the special administrator of Savusavu Town Council, voiced his concerns, stating, “For months, I’ve raised issues about police misconduct in Savusavu, but nothing has changed. This is a serious problem.”

In light of the incident, Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew has instructed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to conduct a thorough investigation. The police confirmed that Radua was assaulted by another detainee and attempted to rush him to the hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead.

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has also voiced concerns, emphasizing that the state is accountable for individuals in custody. Commission chairperson Pravesh Sharma highlighted the necessity for improved safety protocols during police detention.

Tragically, the Radua family recently lost their home to a fire, compounding their heartache with this profound loss.

In light of this incident, there is an opportunity for reforms within the police system, which could lead to a safer environment for all individuals in custody. As the community seeks answers and justice, there remains hope for significant changes that prioritize the dignity and safety of every person under police care.
