Over 100 villagers from Ketei and Tovu on the island of Totoya came together today for a special community health outreach event at Tovu Village. The event, organized by the Eastern and Central Division medical team, marked an opportunity for local residents to receive vital healthcare services, free of charge, as part of an ongoing outreach tour aimed at enhancing healthcare access in rural communities throughout Fiji.
Families, including elderly residents and young children, gathered at the village center, where a wide array of health services were offered. Attendees received free screenings for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), dental care, as well as tests for tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS. This outreach program is particularly significant, as many villagers face barriers in accessing these essential services.
Elderly villagers were provided with home visits to ensure they received necessary medical attention, while children were screened for skin diseases and other health concerns. The medical team, comprised of doctors, nurses, and local health workers, prioritized personalized care and health education, underscoring the importance of preventative measures.
This event was not just about healthcare; it celebrated community spirit and compassion. As residents left the village center with smiles and new knowledge, the outreach highlighted the collective responsibility and unity within the community, emphasizing the role of health initiatives in fostering overall wellbeing.
This community outreach initiative aligns with similar programs conducted in other remote areas of Fiji, such as Cakova Village in Moala and Naveicovatu in the Wainibuka district, where nearby residents also benefited from free medical services. These ongoing efforts reflect the Ministry of Health and Medical Services’ commitment to bridge healthcare gaps and improve health outcomes for underserved populations throughout the islands.
The collective success of these outreach programs is a hopeful sign that dedicated healthcare initiatives can continue to enhance the lives of individuals in even the most remote communities, paving the way for a healthier future across Fiji.
