Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has called on parents to engage in proactive discussions with their children regarding the potential repercussions of their actions. This statement follows an incident involving a group of youths at the Mead Road housing complex, where tensions flared after a brawl earlier in the week.

Commissioner Tudravu emphasized the importance of parental involvement, stating, “Parents, talk to your children. Don’t test the law, thinking that their young age will soften our approach—it will not happen under my watch.” He warned that there would be no leniency for parents who expect kindness if their children find themselves on the wrong side of the law.

In response to the incident, police officers from the Southern Division have been actively visiting local schools to address seniors and have convened meetings with officials from the Public Rental Board. Additionally, community figures, including Reverend Tevita Vuniwaqa from the Nabua Methodist Church Circuit, have offered to conduct meetings with local youths to foster an environment of peace.

Currently, police are questioning eight students as part of an ongoing investigation into the brawl, which originated from a dispute between two students on Sunday. Commissioner Tudravu urged the community to intervene in minor conflicts before they escalate into more serious issues, stating, “These incidents don’t just happen. This is when we, as a society, must step in and correct our children before things get worse.”

As investigations continue, there is a hopeful message about community involvement. Together, with the support of parents, schools, and local leaders, the community can work towards creating a safer environment for its youth. Engaging in these discussions not only helps address immediate concerns but also reinforces a collective responsibility for nurturing a positive and peaceful atmosphere.
