In a touching demonstration of community spirit, the Golden Age Home in Samabula, Suva, recently celebrated Diwali with its elderly residents, fostering joy and unity during the festival of lights. The event, which took place on Friday, was organized by dedicated staff members and caregivers to uplift the spirits of the residents and create connections during this culturally significant occasion.

Residents enjoyed a festive lunch that included traditional Diwali sweets, a delightful way to bring the festive flavors into the home. The celebration was enriched by a live performance from the Fiji Corrections Services Band, which added a cheerful soundtrack to the event, evoking smiles from all attendees.

The festivities also featured vibrant cultural dances performed by artists from the Indian High Commission’s Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, filling the space with colorful energy that resonated with the spirit of Diwali.

Veremo Muria, the Director of Social Protection, emphasized the significance of this celebration for the residents. He stated, “Our residents deserve to experience the joy and warmth of Diwali. This celebration not only honors the rich cultural heritage of our community but also brings our residents together, creating cherished memories and strengthening bonds with their caregivers.”

Such events not only celebrate cultural diversity but also highlight the importance of inclusivity and emotional well-being for elderly community members. They remind us of the profound impact of community interactions on mental health, proving that moments of joy and connection can significantly enhance the quality of life for seniors.
