Nasinu receives strong township and vanua Kalabu backing ahead of Deans final

Nasinu Secondary School has the full support of the Nasinu township and the vanua of Kalabu as they gear up for the grand final of the 2025 Vodafone Super Deans trophy tomorrow.

On Wednesday, Nasinu Town Council executive chairman Felix Magnus, together with the head of the Yavusa of Kalabu and other stakeholders, visited the school to back both the under-18 and under-19 teams that will contest the final. They also donated food items to the school, underscoring a continued partnership with the community.

Magnus, who led the delegation, said the team’s emergence as finalists and the school’s visit were significant for Nasinu. “We have every hope in the team, and we believe that with divine intervention and the blessings of the vanua, the team will be able to pull off their first Deans victory ever,” he stated.

This support is not a one-off visit but part of a sustained relationship that has grown as Nasinu’s Deans campaign has progressed, particularly in the U18 and U19 divisions. “It means a lot to the township of Nasinu. Over the last years we have tried our best to lift Nasinu township, we’ve worked with residents and schools, and being here at Nasinu Secondary is a continuation of that relationship,” Magnus added. He also recalled their involvement earlier in the year with the National Fire Authority to ensure that the school was water blasted and ready, and he reaffirmed the council’s commitment to aiding the school’s infrastructural needs.

NSS principal Naisa Cama said the school was surprised but grateful for the visit and the renewed backing from the township and vanua as they pursue success in the Deans final tomorrow.

The U18 side is scheduled to play Ratu Kadavulevu School at 5.30pm, while the U19 team will face Tailevu North College at 2.50pm. Both matches will be held as part of the Deans activities at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Nasinu’s Deans journey is part of a longer arc for the school’s rugby program. The team last appeared in a Deans final in 2012, a drought they have worked hard to break as they pursue another chapter in Fiji’s school rugby history. The community’s backing—along with the support of former players and local leaders—has become a key driver in their bid to lift the trophy this year.

What this means for Nasinu and the community: the backing from local authorities and the vanua signals a strong model of youth development through sport, with potential benefits for player pathways, school pride, and regional rugby culture in Fiji. The final is set to showcase how community support and youth programs can drive lasting impact beyond the field.

Editor’s note: The story highlights how alumni, local governance, and cultural leaders are intertwining to support school sport. A follow-up feature on team leadership, coaching strategies, and the broader development pathway could offer readers a deeper look at how Nasinu and other schools are building sustainable programs for Fiji’s rugby stars of tomorrow.
