Commonwealth Leaders Gather in Samoa: What’s at Stake?

The upcoming 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa, is set to serve as a significant platform for in-depth discussions, according to Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Mata’afa. She emphasized that the week-long event will particularly benefit Commonwealth youths.

Mata’afa noted, “They are central to our discussions on prosperity, fairness, and sustainable development. Through the people and women’s forums, we have the chance to listen to these vital perspectives.”

The meeting commenced with a panel discussion featuring Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lenora Qereqeretabua. She remarked on the importance of women leaders from conflict zones engaging with each other, stating that it is encouraging for women to converse despite national differences.

CHOGM convenes representatives from 56 countries across Africa, the Caribbean and Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific. The meeting aims to strengthen multilateral cooperation, identify new opportunities, and address shared challenges for the benefit of future generations. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is also expected to participate in the event.
