Commonwealth Leaders Converge in Samoa: A Climate Call to Action

Participants at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) Samoa 2024, taking place in Apia, will engage in discussions aimed at fostering cooperation among Commonwealth states. The event will provide a platform for sharing knowledge and showcasing advancements on important initiatives.

During the CHOGM Samoa 2024, leaders and representatives will participate in executive sessions and a leader’s retreat to address shared priorities that will inform the organization’s future programs.

Commonwealth Secretary General, Patricia Scotland, emphasized the significance of holding the meeting in Apia. She noted that “CHOGM Samoa 2024 comes at a defining moment in our history, when the effects of climate change are no longer distant threats.” According to Ms. Scotland, these threats have become immediate, affecting lives and livelihoods, particularly in the Pacific, where some countries are experiencing sea level rises four times the global average.

Ms. Scotland reaffirmed the Commonwealth’s unwavering support for the Pacific region and highlighted the organization’s potential to drive meaningful change. She expressed confidence that the collective decisions made by leaders at CHOGM will positively influence the wellbeing of communities and the environment.
