At the Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting held in Nadi, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka addressed the imperative of grounding the rule of law in fairness and robust institutions as nations confront swiftly evolving global challenges. With over 150 delegates from 56 countries in attendance, Rabuka emphasized the integral role of justice systems in maintaining national stability, safeguarding citizens, and enhancing public trust in governance.

In his address, Rabuka remarked, “These tides move swiftly and at times unpredictably. No nation is untouched by these shifts.” He underscored the need for justice systems to provide certainty and stability, particularly during periods of social and economic transformation. “To anchor justice is to ensure that amid these changes, the rule of law remains firmly grounded in fairness, guided by principles and upheld by institutions that protect rights, safeguard the vulnerable and create space for mercy,” he affirmed.

Highlighting the foundation of resilience, Rabuka argued that it begins with strong legal frameworks rather than merely focusing on infrastructure or technology. “Resilience begins with justice — with law that holds steady under pressure, with institutions strong enough to serve every member of society,” he stated, calling for a collective commitment to preserve the protections essential for citizens.

Rabuka also pointed to the mounting pressures faced by justice systems globally, acknowledging that institutions in many countries are grappling with increased demand amidst rapid changes. He noted, “Across the world today, the rule of law is under pressure in ways both visible and subtle.” The Prime Minister cautioned that weakened legal systems, uneven application of laws, or a loss of public trust can lead to significant hardship for ordinary citizens.

The Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting serves as a platform for law ministers, attorneys-general, and senior officials to engage in discussions about legislative reform, enhancing justice systems, and fostering cooperation among member nations. It is an opportunity to reinforce the commitment to the rule of law and improve the delivery of justice to all individuals.

In a world marked by uncertainty, the commitment displayed at this meeting is a hopeful indication of collective efforts towards nurturing resilient legal frameworks that uphold fairness and integrity.
