Newly appointed Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has pledged to tackle the ongoing challenges facing society. Speaking at her swearing-in ceremony at the State House, Kiran emphasized the importance of her role, stating, “This is a responsibility I take with the utmost humility, knowing that the work of this ministry touches the very heart of our nation—our families, our communities, and our future.”
Kiran began her address by recognizing the efforts of her predecessor, Lynda Tabuya, highlighting the solid groundwork laid for the ministry’s ongoing mission. She expressed gratitude, saying, “Vinaka vakalevu—your efforts have paved the way for us to take this mission forward.”
In her remarks, Kiran underscored that empowering women, protecting children, and assisting the most vulnerable members of society requires a collective effort. She reinforced the significance of women in families and communities, noting that many still encounter obstacles to equality, safety, and opportunities. “Together, we will strengthen initiatives that promote women’s economic empowerment, ensure gender equality, and create opportunities for women to lead in all spheres of life.”
Kiran also expressed a commitment to prioritizing the protection, education, and well-being of children, asserting, “Our children are our greatest treasure.” She highlighted the importance of combating child abuse, supporting vulnerable families, and creating environments where every child can thrive.
Additionally, she emphasized the need to extend support to marginalized groups, including the elderly, individuals living with disabilities, and families facing financial hardships. “We will review and enhance social protection programs to ensure they are inclusive, effective, and responsive to the needs of our people.”
This renewed commitment from the Minister showcases a hopeful and proactive approach to addressing the social inequalities faced by various groups within society and reinforces the idea that everyone deserves a chance at a fulfilling life. The future looks promising with strong leadership dedicated to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment for all citizens.
