The inquiry into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is advancing well, though it will require more time to meet its reporting deadline. Justice David E. Ashton-Lewis, the chair of the Commission, has indicated that the hearings will extend beyond the initial schedule, including sessions on Saturdays to ensure everything is wrapped up by the end of January.

Justice Ashton-Lewis shared that the inquiry is making good progress, recently estimating that they have completed 29 hearings. He expressed satisfaction with the cooperation from witnesses, highlighting recent testimonies, including those from the Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, and the Secretary of the Electoral Commission.

The commitment to extend sessions demonstrates the Commission’s determination to complete a thorough examination of the appointment, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability within governmental institutions.

This inquiry not only signifies a rigorous approach to governance but also reflects a broader commitment to uphold democratic values in Fiji. As proceedings continue, there lies hope that the findings will foster a culture of integrity leading to positive changes in the country.
