Two members of the Commission of Inquiry investigating the death of featherweight boxer Ubayed Haider, previously known as Nathan Singh, have resigned from their positions. The resignations came from former Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Land Force Commander Pita Driti and the chairman of the Boxing Commission of Fiji, Adi Narayan. This information was confirmed by Minister of Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru.

Narayan indicated that he stepped down to ensure transparency in the inquiry. “I’ve set up the committee and I’ve excused myself, so the committee has got another member,” he remarked, expressing hope for an independent outcome to the investigation. Driti reportedly resigned due to a conflict of interest.

Saukuru mentioned that they are in the process of finalizing the third member of the inquiry team. At present, the team consists of Philip Eneriko, the director for Youth and Sports, and Edwin Wainiqolo from Lautoka, who is a lawyer and will lead the inquiry. The team is scheduled to conduct interviews on Friday.

Tragically, Haider collapsed after his International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Asia Pacific featherweight title fight at Prince Charles Park in Nadi on October 26. After undergoing head surgery at Lautoka Hospital, he remained in a coma until his passing on November 10. He was laid to rest at Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu shortly after.

In a positive development, Narayan also announced that boxing promotions are set to continue. Several promoters have renewed their licenses for the upcoming year, with Bluewater Boxing Promotions planning to host multiple events. The announcement about the new promotions is expected in December, led by promoter Samir Khan.

As the inquiry progresses, it may well pave the way for enhanced safety measures in the sport, ensuring that future events can take place with greater security for athletes. The community continues to rally behind the efforts to uphold the integrity of the sport, demonstrating a commitment to improvement following this tragic event.
