In celebration of the 155th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, students and teachers from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) High School gathered to contemplate his values and principles. Gandhi, originally named Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, is renowned for his influence not only in India but also around the globe with his ideals.
A special event was held last week at Kshatriya Hall in Suva to honor Gandhi’s legacy. Sashi Kiran, the Women, Children and Social Protection Assistant Minister, served as the chief guest at the occasion. She emphasized Gandhi’s significance in the peace-building movement, noting his role as a pioneering figure in non-violent resistance to achieve justice.
“Although he appeared physically frail, he made a profound impact not just on his own nation but on many others worldwide,” she remarked. Kiran inspired students from Gandhi-inspired schools to embody the values advocated by Gandhi in all their endeavors. She expressed gratitude towards the Gujarat Education Society for their ongoing commitment to preserving Gandhi’s ideals through education and annual commemorations.
Students from Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Memorial School (RSMS) were also part of the celebration. Year 11 student Maikeli Lemeki highlighted that Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, stating that his transformation from a modest lawyer to an international symbol of peace and non-violence was remarkable.
“Gandhi’s strength stemmed not from violence, power, or money, but from his unwavering belief in Ahimsa, the principle of non-violence. He taught that true courage lies in opposing injustice peacefully,” Lemeki explained. He noted that Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violent resistance, known as Satyagraha, became a source of hope for millions, extending far beyond India.
Sanjay Raman, the head of school at MGM High School, mentioned that Gandhi Day is observed on October 2 as a national holiday in India and is recognized globally as the International Day of Non-Violence. “At MGM High School, we honor this day every year, and this marks the 155th Gandhi Day,” he stated. The commemorative events included cultural performances by students and the presentation of awards.
