Commander Ro Jone Kalouniwai has asserted that a coup is not a possibility under his leadership. During an interview on The Lens @177, he emphasized the military’s commitment to being subordinate to the current government.
“It will never happen,” he declared, questioning why he would risk everything that has been built since 2022. He highlighted the progress made in transforming the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the restorative reconciliation processes initiated for those affected.
When asked about any frustrations caused by political actions, Ro Kalouniwai maintained that he intentionally distances himself from politics. “It’s not good for me, it’s not proper that I get involved with politics,” he stated, explaining that he relies on his officers for briefings and advice.
Reflecting on 2022, he described it as a crucial and precarious time for the RFMF, which could have resulted in its collapse. He took it upon himself to guide his team towards a clear direction and purpose.
He also noted that he has not faced any dissent among his ranks. “Things are changing, and we have a situation where the Opposition is split in two, but that’s politics. That’s for them to resolve. We won’t get involved in it,” he concluded.
