Combating the Rise of Online Violence Against Women

In today’s digital world, the issue of technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) has emerged as a serious concern. Online platforms, originally designed to promote inclusion and connection, have increasingly become hostile environments for women and girls, who often face harassment, threats, and inappropriate comments.

Fiji’s Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, is actively addressing this concern. She has proposed strengthening the country’s online safety mechanisms, which she deems inadequate. Collaborating with organizations like the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Tabuya emphasizes the impact of online harassment on women’s mental and physical health, asserting that a healthy woman contributes positively to society.

In a proactive move, she plans to host a forum for young women next month to discuss and develop strategies to combat TFGBV. This initiative aligns with the global campaign of 16 Days of Activism. Additionally, the UNFPA has carried out a gender analysis of Fiji’s Online Safety Act to identify its weaknesses and enhance its effectiveness in safeguarding women.

Tabuya points out that women are disproportionately targeted online, facing harassment ten times more than their male counterparts. Her personal experiences with such attacks fuel her resolve to ensure that necessary legal protections are established. She advocates for accountability from internet service providers and telecommunications companies, urging them to prioritize women’s safety over privacy concerns.

This initiative not only aims to protect women and girls but also seeks to foster a society where all individuals, regardless of gender, can safely navigate online spaces.
