The Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji is advocating for a stronger emphasis on moral education in schools to combat serious national challenges, particularly the rising drug crisis affecting youth. President Arun Padarath has stressed the urgent need for community awareness and collaborative action to improve the well-being of the population, highlighting the deeply disturbing trend of children being involved in drug abuse and trafficking.

Padarath stated, “This is a national issue at the moment. The alarming rise in drug abuse and trafficking is a growing concern. It is even more disturbing that children are being used in this network.” He asserts that schools are increasingly impacted by these issues, indicating a necessity for moral education and heightened community vigilance to address the root causes of this crisis.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, acknowledged the challenges faced by the Narcotics Bureau but remains confident that, through enhanced funding and strategic planning, the government will effectively address these pressing issues in the years to come. He remarked, “More people are now involved and exposed, and the government is deeply committed to tackling this crisis that has gripped the country.”

This call to action resonates strongly with earlier discussions held during the School Management Association of Fiji’s conference, where President Govind Singh voiced concerns over deteriorating student behavior and escalating drug use in schools. Reports revealed that students are showing signs of substance abuse, with incidents of drug use increasingly commonplace in educational environments.

Community leaders and experts continue to emphasize the collective responsibility of parents, educators, and government agencies in combating the drug crisis. Strengthening character development within education and fostering collaborations between schools and communities may pave the way for innovative solutions and a healthier environment for the youth.

Despite the challenges, there is hope as awareness and community engagement rise, indicating a potential shift towards more effective strategies and positive outcomes for Fiji’s future generations. By working together, stakeholders can create a nurturing atmosphere that not only addresses immediate concerns but also fosters an environment conducive to growth and success for its youth.
