Colorful Creations: A Russian Artist’s Heartfelt Journey in Fiji

Vera Sapozhnikova, a Russian artist and former missionary, is a familiar face at Suva’s ROC Markets, particularly noted for her presence at the MSME Festive Market, which concludes today at the Civic Centre Car Park. Since relocating to Fiji in 2006, Sapozhnikova has embraced the country as her home.

Initially arriving as a Christian missionary, she spent many years serving as a Bible teacher before retiring from that role. Now, her focus has shifted to her passion for creating eye-catching hand-painted decor, including bottles and plates that have become popular among locals.

Sapozhnikova shares that her artistic journey began five years ago when she transitioned from hobbyist to seller. Each of her beautifully painted pieces is the result of meticulous craftsmanship, undergoing eight stages of acrylic hand-painting. Remarkably, she is self-taught, finding inspiration deeply personal rather than tied to her Russian roots. “The design is from my own heart,” she explains, highlighting the individuality reflected in her art.

With prices ranging from $25 to $75, her creations are accessible for many market-goers. Despite the loss of her husband, who passed away several years ago in Russia, Sapozhnikova continues to thrive. She maintains a peaceful life in Nausori while staying connected with her two sons who reside in Russia.

Vera’s story is a testament to the power of pursuing one’s passion and creativity, illustrating how art can transcend cultural boundaries and express personal identity.

In a world where people often seek to define themselves by convention, Sapozhnikova’s unique journey is a reminder that true artistry comes from the heart and reflects individual experiences.
