The Suva City Council (SCC) acknowledges the complexity of the rising number of street dwellers in the capital, as expressed by acting chief executive officer Tevita Boseiwaqa. In response to this pressing social challenge, SCC is enhancing its efforts through a collaborative approach involving various government and non-government agencies.

A recent survey identified 75 individuals living on the streets of Suva, and Mr. Boseiwaqa emphasized the importance of a multi-agency task force to find sustainable solutions. This task force will facilitate coordination among several organizations, including the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare and the Fiji Police Force, as well as non-governmental organizations like City Impact and Inspire Pacific.

To address the long-term needs of street dwellers, SCC is exploring initiatives such as transitional housing, skills training, and supportive services to assist in their reintegration into society. While these discussions are still in their early stages, the commitment to a collaborative strategy hints at hope for creating effective solutions.

The Catholic Church in Fiji has also raised concerns regarding the growing number of street dwellers, particularly among the iTaukei community. Church representative Ben Salacakau highlighted the urgent need for a coordinated plan to provide immediate support such as food and shelter, alongside longer-term solutions like counseling and job training. The church’s outreach efforts exemplify the importance of community involvement in addressing these social issues.

The rising number of street dwellers presents a complex challenge, but the combined efforts of various agencies, community organizations, and the church highlight a proactive approach towards finding sustainable solutions. Continued dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders can pave the way for better support systems, ultimately helping to improve the lives of those affected by homelessness.
