The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Employment, Maritino Nemani, has pointed out that Australia and New Zealand are increasingly recognizing the necessity of addressing the challenges faced by workers participating in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme.
Nemani highlighted the significance of collaboration among various stakeholders to enhance the conditions and support for these workers. He remarked, “I believe we are not addressing the issues surrounding PALM scheme workers in isolation.” He noted that Fiji is working alongside organizations like UNICEF and engaging with other labor-signing countries such as Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands to improve the situation, as they share similar challenges.
He emphasized the need to establish a sustainable system that benefits both the workers and their families left behind. He stated, “The key stakeholders, particularly the receiving countries, have a crucial role in this process; we need their support as they receive our workers.” Nemani underscored that Australia and New Zealand are vital in providing solutions to these issues.
