The next time you come across a spontaneous tin band performance, known as qiri kava, in your neighborhood, consider making a small donation. Your contribution could play a significant role in improving someone’s life, whether by helping to provide food, clothing, or even supporting a youth’s education.
Not all street bands are merely there to spread cheer. For instance, the Washington Tin Band from Waigasa in Lami has embraced a mission beyond entertainment. Since the start of the year, they have been actively performing in Lami and Suva, using their music to promote joy and a meaningful cause within their community.
Band leader Irame Ratulele highlighted the importance of their initiative in keeping young people, particularly boys, away from crime and drug use. “Many of our members are students, unemployed, or come from financially challenged backgrounds,” Ratulele shared. On a good day, they can collect up to $800 in donations, which they gather while performing outside busy shopping centers and other popular locations.
After collecting donations, the band allocates 10 percent to their village church, while a portion is reserved for club activities. The remaining funds are distributed among members to support their families, with some also designated for educational expenses like school fees and supplies for both secondary and tertiary students.
The band comes from an area of Lami that has faced its share of challenges, but their work has drastically changed lives for the better. “Every day, we encourage our young members to steer clear of substance abuse, such as glue sniffing and drugs,” Ratulele stated. Senior band members reflect on their education and emphasize its importance to younger generations, urging them to strive for a brighter future through education and stable employment.
The Washington Tin Band believes that providing job opportunities is a critical factor in reducing crime rates. When individuals can afford their necessities, they are less likely to resort to theft or other illegal activities.
Their dedication and impact were acknowledged last year when they won the Showcase Tin Band competition in Suva, a recognition of their talent and commitment to fostering positive change within their community.
In conclusion, the Washington Tin Band exemplifies how music can serve as a powerful tool for social change, encouraging youth to pursue education and resist negative influences. Their story is a hopeful reminder that community efforts can bring about transformation and inspire future generations to build a brighter path forward.
