The Commission of Inquiry (COI) has asked the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, for an extension on the investigation timeline regarding the tragic death of featherweight boxer Ubayd Haider. COI chairman Edwin Wainiqolo announced that the inquiry team requires an additional two weeks to complete their investigations, as they have yet to interview key figures including promoter Fred Chand and director Mohammed Shameem.

Shameem was initially scheduled to be interviewed at 4 PM yesterday; however, the meeting was postponed due to the investigation team meeting in Suva. Wainiqolo confirmed that Shameem will now be interviewed on Monday via Zoom. He highlights logistical challenges, stating, “The requested time was inconvenient to the members of the panel because I live in the West while the rest of the panels reside in Suva.”

In addition, they will issue formal correspondence to Chand’s legal representation, requesting a response within seven days. Wainiqolo pointed out that if they do not receive a reply by the deadline next Friday, the investigation will proceed without Chand’s input.

Speaking remotely from Vancouver, Canada, Shameem expressed his readiness for the interview but noted the COI’s decision to reschedule. He also accused Adi Narayan, chairman of the Boxing Commission of Fiji, of unjustly placing blame on them. “I don’t need a legal counsel, I know what I have to say – I have been involved in boxing for the last 60 years. Boxing is in my blood; I know the rules,” Shameem asserted.

Ubayd Haider tragically collapsed after enduring a ninth-round technical knockout against Sydney-based boxer Runqi Zhou during their bout for the IBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park on October 26. He was quickly taken to Zen’s Medical before being transferred to Aspen Hospital in Lautoka, where he underwent surgery after falling into a coma. Unfortunately, Haider passed away on November 10.

Summary: The COI is seeking an extension to continue their investigation into the death of boxer Ubayd Haider, with key interviews pending. The extended timeline aims to ensure a thorough investigation, highlighting the commitment to justice in the wake of this tragedy.

It is important to remain hopeful for outcomes that provide closure for Haider’s family and the boxing community, as the inquiry seeks to address concerns around safety in the sport.
