The Gold Coast Senibiau team demonstrated remarkable determination as they prepared for the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s tournament, which began yesterday at the Vatulele District School grounds. Hailing from Korotogo Village in the province of Nadroga, the team faced significant challenges, including a lack of sponsorship. To fund their journey to the island of Vatulele, the players engaged in innovative fundraising activities, such as climbing for coconuts and constructing pig pens.

Esala Masinisau, a player from the team, shared insights into their struggles and resourcefulness. “We faced a lot of challenges such as the lack of a sponsor, and in coming here, we were able to do so by climbing for coconuts and constructing pig pens,” Masinisau stated in an interview.

The team made their way to Vatulele by traveling from Korotogo Village to Korolevu landing, where they boarded a fiberglass boat for a fare of $40 each. As they participated in the two-day tournament, Masinisau expressed his hope that returning from Vatulele with a victory would serve as a springboard for their future sevens tournaments. He extended gratitude to their families and supporters, indicating a strong sense of community behind their efforts.

This story reflects the power of perseverance and creativity in overcoming obstacles. It serves as an inspiring reminder that with determination and support from loved ones, even teams without traditional sponsorship can find ways to achieve their dreams and participate in significant events.

In conclusion, the Gold Coast Senibiau team’s journey is not just about rugby but also about resilience, community, and the pursuit of excellence against the odds. Their hopeful outlook for the tournament and future endeavors is something to celebrate.
