Peni Namulo and Sailasa Kaitani are reaping the rewards of their roadside coconut-selling venture in Nadi, with significant contributions to the community’s health and well-being. Over the past 14 years, Mr. Namulo, 37, emphasizes that their work extends beyond business; they are providing a natural remedy through the refreshing juice of green coconuts.
Mr. Namulo explained that many of their customers include individuals suffering from non-communicable diseases or those recently discharged from hospitals, all seeking the hydrating benefits of coconut water. “Customers often arrive with empty bottles, insisting that our coconut juice is their medicine,” he noted. He highlighted a growing trend among customers who favor coconuts with minimal meat, with the main focus being on the juice.
His satisfaction comes from witnessing the positive outcomes for his clientele, especially when they return to express their gratitude for the health improvements they’ve experienced. Initially, he noticed a steady influx of tourists and Indo-Fijians, but recently more iTaukei residents have also joined their customer base.
The price of green coconuts varies between $4 to $5 each, and Mr. Namulo mentioned that local vendors often enjoy lucrative deals with nearby hotels and resorts, sometimes generating over $100 in daily sales. During peak times, demand can soar, with orders reaching 200 to 300 coconuts in a day, and just a week ago, an astounding order of 1,000 coconuts was placed in a single day.
This burgeoning business not only showcases the entrepreneurial spirit of Mr. Namulo and Mr. Kaitani but also highlights the importance of natural health solutions in fostering community well-being. Their story resonates as a beacon of hope, illustrating how small businesses can significantly impact both the local economy and the health of individuals.
In summary, as green coconut sellers, Namulo and Kaitani are not just entrepreneurs; they are essential contributors to the health of their community, transforming simple roadside sales into a valuable service that supports wellness and recovery.
