Coconut Revolution: Unveiling Varieties for Health and Profit

The Department of Tree Crops, part of the Ministry of Agriculture, aims to educate the public on various coconut varieties and their health and commercial benefits. This message was emphasized by Senior Technical Assistant Yaminiasi Rovabakola during the Agriculture Show held in Valelevu.

Yaminiasi Bakola, a Senior Technical Officer, discussed the importance of awareness regarding different coconut crops. He explained that coconut varieties are classified into two main categories: the Dwarf species, including the Bu variety, and the Tall species, which is primarily harvested for copra. Due to increasing tourist demand, the Bu variety has gained popularity, prompting a push for farmers to cultivate it.

Bakola expressed optimism about the future of the Bu industry, anticipating growth as tourist numbers rise, which will also highlight the health benefits associated with this coconut variety.

Alifeo Kalokodromu, a Casual with the Ministry of Agriculture from Taveuni, shared the challenges faced by coconut farmers in the islands. He noted that adverse weather conditions, including floods and strong winds, are significant issues. Additionally, he highlighted a lack of knowledge about coconut planting among the population, leading to misuses of the plant, which undermines its importance to the i-Taukei community. He pointed out that while the sugar and rice industries emerged later, coconut crops have longstanding significance for the i-Taukei people.

The Agriculture Show, which showcased over 80 informational booths and 130 display booths, concluded today, marking a successful event organized by the Ministry of Agriculture.
