Peni Namulo and Sailasa Kaitani, roadside vendors in Nadi, have found success and purpose in selling green coconuts for the past 14 years. Mr. Namulo, 37, highlighted that their role extends beyond mere business; it contributes positively to the health of their community by providing refreshing coconut juice, particularly to those afflicted with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) or recovering patients.

Mr. Namulo noted a significant trend among their customers, many of whom come seeking coconut juice rather than the flesh of the nut. “Customers increasingly arrive with empty bottles to fill with coconut juice. Many refer to it as their medicine,” he explained. He observed that a notable number of regulars suffer from diabetes or other health conditions and often make purchases for sick family members as well.

The coconut vendors have not only maintained a steady customer base, including tourists and Indo-Fijians, but are also attracting a growing number of iTaukei customers. The price of green coconuts ranges between $4 to $5, which has proven manageable for their clientele.

Mr. Namulo shared that they can earn over $100 daily, especially benefiting from large orders from local hotels and resorts. There have been instances where they received requests for up to 1,000 coconuts in a single day, significantly boosting their business.

This story reflects how small businesses can impact community health while thriving economically. The resilience and commitment of Mr. Namulo and Mr. Kaitani to serve their customers not only speak to their entrepreneurial spirit but also offer a hopeful example of how local vendors can play a vital role in addressing health and wellness through accessible products like coconut juice.
