Fluctuating prices and unpredictable weather conditions are presenting significant challenges for coconut farmers in Valelawa, Dreketi. Farmer Dipika Prakash highlighted that copra prices tend to rise during the dry season when coconut supply diminishes, primarily because fewer coconuts fall from the trees, leading to increased demand. However, this trend shifts during the rainy season when the abundance of coconuts can lead to lower prices.
These seasonal price changes complicate planning and investment for farmers, making it difficult for them to make informed decisions. Ms. Prakash noted that adverse weather events such as flooding, cyclones, and strong winds have compounded these issues, damaging her family’s plantation significantly. Many of their coconut trees, some of which are over 50 years old and were planted by her grandfather, have been lost during storms, and she mentioned that around 50 to 60 trees have already succumbed to damage.
To address the losses, the family has started to replant new coconut trees, but they face a long wait before seeing any returns from these younger plantations. The urgency of support is apparent, especially as efforts to reach out to the acting Agriculture Minister, Alitia Bainivalu, for assistance have been unsuccessful.
This situation aligns with recent government initiatives in Fiji aimed at revitalizing the coconut industry. In a recent meeting, government officials emphasized the need for increased support to coconut farmers amidst rising global demand for copra, which has surged nearly 60%. They are also working on distributing coconut seedlings and enhancing farmers’ productivity through programs that provide essential tools and training.
With the ongoing challenges, it remains crucial for the government and agricultural departments to implement strategies that not only support farmers like Ms. Prakash but also address the long-term sustainability of coconut farming in Fiji. The shared resilience of farmers in facing these challenges offers hope for the future of the coconut industry, promising potential for economic growth and community upliftment that can stem from improved agricultural practices and support systems.
