The Department of Tree Crops under the Ministry of Agriculture is working to educate the public about various coconut varieties and their health and commercial benefits. This message was emphasized by Senior Technical Assistant Yaminiasi Rovabakola during the Agriculture Show in Valelevu.
Yaminiasi Bakola, a Senior Technical Officer, discussed the importance of awareness regarding coconut crops. She explained that coconut varieties are classified into two main categories: the Dwarf species, known as Bu, and the Tall species, primarily used for copra production. The Bu variety is currently in high demand, particularly due to its popularity among tourists, prompting encouragement for farmers to cultivate this specific variety.
Bakola expressed optimism for the future of the Bu industry, citing the expected growth in tourism and its associated health benefits.
Alifeo Kalokodromu, a Casual worker for the Ministry of Agriculture from Taveuni, shared the challenges faced by coconut farmers in the islands. He highlighted adverse weather conditions, including floods and strong winds, as significant hurdles. Additionally, he noted that a lack of knowledge about proper coconut cultivation and the misuse of the trees has hindered progress. He stressed the importance of coconuts for the i-Taukei community, stating that while the sugar and rice industries have emerged later, coconuts have always been a vital part of their culture.
The Agriculture Show, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, concluded today after two days, featuring over 80 booths for information and an additional 130 booths for displays.
