Coconut Craze: Unveiling New Varieties at Agriculture Show!

The Department of Tree Crops, part of the Ministry of Agriculture, aims to educate the public about the various coconut varieties and their health and commercial benefits. This message was emphasized by Senior Technical Assistant Yaminiasi Rovabakola during the Agriculture show in Valelevu.

Rovabakola explained that coconut crops are categorized into two main types: the Dwarf species, known as Bu, and the Tall species, which is primarily used for copra production. The Bu variety is currently in high demand due to increased tourist interest, prompting the department to encourage farmers to cultivate this type.

There is optimism about the future of the Bu industry, with hopes for significant growth given the anticipated rise in tourism and its health benefits.

Alifeo Kalokodromu, a Casual worker for the Ministry of Agriculture from Taveuni, shared insights on the challenges coconut farmers face, including adverse weather conditions like floods and strong winds. He also pointed out that many individuals lack knowledge about proper coconut planting techniques, which leads to loss of valuable resources. Kalokodromu highlighted the cultural significance of coconut crops for the i-Taukei people, noting that coconut farming predates other industries such as sugar and rice.

The Agriculture Show, which concluded today, featured over 80 booths focused on information and an additional 130 booths for displays.
