Coconut Craze: Exploring Varieties and Benefits at Agriculture Show

The Department of Tree Crops, part of the Ministry of Agriculture, aims to educate the public about the various coconut varieties and their benefits for health and commercial use.

This message was emphasized by Senior Technical Assistant of Tree Crops, Yaminiasi Rovabakola, during the Agriculture Show held today in Valelevu. Senior Technical Officer Yaminiasi Bakola also discussed the importance of raising awareness about different coconut crop varieties.

“Coconut crops are categorized into two main types: the Dwarf species, specifically the Bu variety, and the Tall species used primarily for copra production. The Bu variety is in high demand due to increasing tourist interest, prompting us to encourage farmers to cultivate this variety,” Bakola stated.

She expressed optimism for the growth of the Bu industry in the future. “The Bu industry is expected to flourish in the coming years, especially with the anticipated rise in tourist arrivals and the health benefits associated with this coconut type,” she added.

Alifeo Kalokodromu, a casual worker for the Ministry of Agriculture from Taveuni, highlighted the challenges faced by coconut farmers in the islands. “Weather conditions such as floods and strong winds significantly impact our farming. Additionally, there is a lack of awareness about proper coconut cultivation methods. Many people prune the trees without utilizing them for their intended purposes, which is a significant issue, especially considering the cultural importance of coconuts to the i-Taukei people. Unlike the sugar and rice industries, coconut farming has been integral to the i-Taukei community for generations.”

The event also marked the conclusion of a two-day Agriculture Show organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, featuring over 80 booths dedicated to information and an additional 130 booths for displays.
