Coconut Craze: Discover the Health and Economic Benefits Awaiting Farmers!

The Department of Tree Crops under the Ministry of Agriculture is working to educate the public about the various types of coconuts and their health and economic benefits.

This message was emphasized by Senior Technical Assistant Yaminiasi Rovabakola during her address at the Agriculture Show held today in Valelevu. Senior Technical Officer Yaminiasi Bakola also stressed the importance of public knowledge regarding different coconut varieties.

Bakola explained that coconut crops fall into two main categories: Dwarf species, such as the Bu variety, and Tall species, which are primarily used for copra production. She noted that the Bu variety has seen increased demand due to tourist interests, and encouraged farmers to cultivate this type.

Bakola expressed optimism about the future of the Bu industry, citing the expected surge in tourism and the variety’s health benefits as key factors for growth.

Alifeo Kalokodromu, who travels from Taveuni and works casually for the Ministry of Agriculture, spoke about the challenges faced by coconut farmers in the islands. He highlighted adverse weather conditions such as floods and strong winds as significant obstacles. Additionally, he noted a lack of knowledge about coconut cultivation as a challenge, mentioning that many do not utilize the tree to its full potential despite its cultural significance to the i-Taukei people.

The two-day Agriculture Show organized by the Ministry of Agriculture concluded today, featuring over 80 booths dedicated to information and another 130 booths for displays.
