The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is set to convene today to review the candidate selected for the role of Commissioner of Police (COMPOL). Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who chairs the COC, shared this update yesterday.
In the previous month, the COC had met to approve the formation of an independent selection panel tasked with evaluating and shortlisting candidates for the COMPOL position. Prime Minister Rabuka indicated that this panel would present its assessment report during today’s meeting.
After the panel’s presentation, the COC is anticipated to recommend its chosen candidate to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.
The COC plays a crucial advisory role to the President in appointing various key positions, which include the leadership of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, the Electoral Commission, and several others pivotal to governance and public service.
This meeting marks a significant step in the ongoing process of appointing a new police commissioner, a position integral to maintaining law and order in the country. With a structured approach in place for candidate selection, the COC aims to ensure that the appointment is made with careful consideration and integrity.
Overall, this reflects a commitment to transparency and professionalism in public service appointments, which can enhance public trust in governance. As this process unfolds, it will be interesting to see the impact that the new Commissioner of Police will have on maintaining safety and security in Fiji.
