The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is scheduled to convene on Monday, with significant discussions anticipated regarding key appointments following the recent election of a new President. Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu emphasized the urgency of filling essential positions that fall under the COC’s formal recommendation authority.

The COC plays a crucial advisory role to the President concerning various appointments, including the Chair and members of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, the Electoral Commission, the Supervisor of Elections, the Secretary General for Parliament, the Chair and members of the Public Service Commission, and others, such as the Police Commissioner and Reserve Bank Governor.

Mr. Seruiratu expressed optimism about the meeting, noting the importance of securing endorsements for these appointments from the newly elected President, Ratu Naiqama. Among these positions, the role of the Commissioner of Police (COMPOL) remains unfilled, a point that Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua has reiterated as vital for effective governance.

Prime Minister and COC chair Sitiveni Rabuka has recognized the contribution of the current Acting COMPOL, Juki Fong Chew, while acknowledging the necessity for a permanent appointment. Similarly, Senior G17 Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya has indicated that there are several pressing matters that require resolution and underscored that the government understands the importance of following due processes in making these appointments.

In light of this situation, the upcoming meeting presents an opportunity for pivotal changes in governance and the enhancement of leadership within Fiji’s essential institutions, thereby fostering a more effective administration as it moves forward.

This meeting highlights the ongoing commitment of leaders to address key governance roles, ensuring that vital positions are filled effectively for the benefit of public service in Fiji. It underlines a collaborative effort to strengthen the political framework and promote accountability within various commissions.
