The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is scheduled to convene on Monday to address crucial appointments following the recent election of a new President. Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu emphasized that the focus must now shift towards filling significant vacancies that fall under the COC’s formal recommendation authority.
The COC serves as an advisory body to the President for key positions, including:
– Chair and members of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission
– Chair and members of the Electoral Commission
– Supervisor of Elections
– Parliament Secretary General
– Chair and members of the Public Service Commission
– Police Commissioner
– Fiji Correction Services Commissioner
– Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces
– Auditor General
– Governor of the Reserve Bank
Seruiratu expressed anticipation for the upcoming meeting, particularly concerning appointments that will require the endorsement of the new President, Ratu Naiqama.
One of the notable vacancies is the Commissioner of Police position. Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua has repeatedly highlighted the importance of appointing a substantive Commissioner of Police (COMPOL). Prime Minister and COC chair Sitiveni Rabuka acknowledged that the Acting COMPOL Juki Fong Chew has been performing well, but he also recognized the urgency of appointing a permanent successor.
Furthermore, Senior G17 Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya noted that there are many pending issues and confirmed the government’s awareness of the necessary steps to be taken.
This upcoming meeting represents a pivotal moment for the COC and the Fijian government, signaling a commitment to establishing stability and effective leadership across essential public sectors. As the nation looks forward to these appointments, there is a hopeful sense of progress and opportunity for positive change within Fijian governance.
