The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is scheduled to convene today to receive the selected candidate for the role of Commissioner of Police (COMPOL). Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who also chairs the COC, disclosed this information yesterday.
In a meeting last month, the COC approved the formation of an independent selection panel responsible for evaluating and shortlisting applicants for the COMPOL position on behalf of the Commission. Prime Minister Rabuka noted that this panel will present its assessment report at the upcoming meeting.
Following this presentation, it is anticipated that the COC will recommend the chosen candidate to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for final approval.
The COC serves an important advisory role to the President in appointing key positions, including the Chair and members of various commissions such as the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, the Electoral Commission, and the Police Commissioner, among others.
This meeting represents a critical step in ensuring that the leadership within the police force is chosen through a transparent and merit-based process. It reflects a commitment to upholding the rule of law and promoting good governance in Fiji.
In summary, the COC is taking significant measures to appoint a Commissioner of Police, which highlights the ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional integrity and public trust in law enforcement agencies.
