The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is scheduled to convene on Monday, where discussions will center around appointments for several key positions following the recent election of a new President. Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu emphasized the urgency of filling these crucial roles under the COC’s mandate to provide recommendations to the President.

The COC, which advises the President, is responsible for recommending candidates for important positions, including the Chair and members of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, the Electoral Commission, the Supervisor of Elections, the Parliament Secretary General, the Public Service Commission Chair and members, the Police Commissioner, the Director of Fiji Correction Services, the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, the Auditor General, and the Governor of the Reserve Bank.

Seruiratu expressed optimism about the upcoming meeting, noting the significance of these appointments for the government, particularly the urgent need for a substantive Commissioner of Police (COMPOL). Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua has consistently underscored the importance of filling this position. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who chairs the COC, acknowledged the competent performance of the Acting COMPOL, Juki Fong Chew, while also recognizing the importance of appointing a permanent successor. Concerns over pending appointments have also been shared by senior opposition member Faiyaz Koya, who reiterated that the government is aware of the steps that need to be undertaken.

As the COC prepares for this significant meeting, there is a sense of anticipation for the forthcoming appointments that will shape crucial governance roles in Fiji. This moment could pave the way for strengthened governance and public service, reflecting a shared commitment among leaders to enhance the functioning of various institutions in the country.

Overall, the upcoming meeting of the COC represents a pivotal opportunity to establish key leadership positions that will impact the governance landscape in Fiji.
